Registered office, bank account and company changes
Business Bank Account in the Netherlands for Your Dutch BV
A bank file prepared and checked, so the bank's Wwft questions are answered first time. The bank alone decides.
- KVK number first, then the bank
- Approval often 2 to 8 weeks; the bank decides
- Any SEPA IBAN accepted by the Belastingdienst

Help with the bank file for a Dutch company run from abroad
We prepare and check the file a Dutch bank, or a DNB-licensed payment or e-money institution, asks for before opening a business account, and steer the application. The institution decides alone. A business address is a separate service, set out on the registered office page.
It is for a registered BV, or a foreign company with a Dutch establishment, whose directors or UBOs live abroad. The KVK and business.gov.nl say a BV must have a business account. That is guidance and bank practice: no Book 2 provision read imposes it, and the bank statement of art. 2:203a BW lapsed on 1 October 2012.
What's included
The bank's checks are a legal duty, so the work is in the file.
The route decision
Do you need a Dutch IBAN at all? The Belastingdienst accepts any SEPA IBAN; only a founder banking outside SEPA must apply here.
The bank file, assembled and checked
Identity documents, KVK extract, UBO report, articles, shareholders' register, an organisational chart, the business plan and the source of capital.
The right route
The NVB Quick Scan if the NFIA or an RVO-recognised facilitator assists you, otherwise a direct application. Rabobank takes foreign companies through its online application only.
The due-diligence questions answered
Ownership and control, the UBOs, the purpose of the account and, where asked, the source of funds: the matters art. 3(2) Wwft makes the bank establish.
After a refusal
The lawful options: a complaint to the bank, the courts, another bank, a SEPA account abroad, or an e-money institution checked in the DNB register.
The tax-office notification
The company's account notified to the Belastingdienst, by you or by us under your authorisation; a current account only, never a savings account.
Where our service stops
The bank decides, and the Wwft forbids it to open before due diligence is complete (art. 5(1) Wwft).
- We are not a bank, and we sell no account.
- No guarantee of an account, an approval or a faster timeline than the bank's.
- No director, nominee or general attorney-in-fact role for your company.
- No address in this engagement: our address is a separate service.
- No bank ranking, only verifiable differences between banks.
- Incorporation and KVK registration are separate services; our fee is on request.

Decide whether a Dutch IBAN is needed
A SEPA account in your name or the company's may serve; some counterparties insist on a Dutch IBAN (business.gov.nl).
Incorporate and register first
The deed needs no bank statement; the BV and its UBOs then enter the Handelsregister. See what forming a Dutch BV involves step by step, or buying an existing Dutch BV instead of forming a new one by notarial share transfer.
Assemble the file
We check each document against the list below and order the KVK extract and UBO report.
Choose the route
The NVB Quick Scan is open only to founders assisted by the NFIA or an RVO-recognised facilitator, as on a start-up permit in the Netherlands; otherwise apply directly (NVB).
The bank's due diligence
Identity, UBOs, structure, purpose and source of funds; enhanced where the risk is higher or the client's state is on the EU high-risk list (art. 8(1) Wwft).
If the bank refuses
We rework the file and set out the lawful options (Rijksoverheid).
Notify the Belastingdienst
A current account only, through Mijn Belastingdienst Zakelijk with eHerkenning (see getting eHerkenning for a Dutch BV with a foreign director) or by letter (Belastingdienst).
Keep the account
The bank ends the relationship if due diligence can no longer be met (art. 5(3) Wwft). File UBO changes within 7 days; close the account before deregistering the BV.
Not sure your company needs a Dutch IBAN at all?
The SEPA answer comes before any application, and may make one unnecessary.
Documents the bank will ask for
The bank must hold proof of registration and check the UBO entry before opening (art. 4(2) Wwft). The KVK list for a BV:
- A valid identity document for each director and UBO.
- Proof of home address.
- Proof of KVK registration: the KVK number, sometimes an extract.
- UBO information or a KVK UBO report, filed under the UBO register rules and deadlines.
- A copy of the articles of association.
- The shareholders' register the notary hands over at incorporation.
- An organisational chart where a layered structure makes ownership unclear.
- The countries you trade in, if the account serves foreign transactions.
- On request: business plan, expected turnover, source of capital, actual stakeholders.
- Non-EU founders: a visa or residence permit, where the bank asks.

Problems we solve
Most refusals are the bank's own choice, not a legal bar (DNB study of 2021, cited by the Minister in the Senate).
- Refused, and no reason given
Banks have freedom of contract with business clients, and secrecy about an FIU report can stop them explaining (art. 23(1) Wwft). We fix the file, then set out the options.
- Directors or UBOs live abroad
Address rules differ by bank; two Quick Scan banks accept a notary-legalised ID copy. A founder's personal account follows different rules from a Dutch bank account for a foreign company.
- Applied before the BV existed
No KVK number, no application, the NVB says. We sequence the deed, the registration and the file so the bank sees a complete company.
- A shielded visiting address
It may rule out online opening; expect a branch visit and more questions (KVK). We plan shielding with the bank route in view.
- "Isn't there a new right to an account?"
Art. 4:71k Wft was enacted by the Act of 20 May 2026 (Stb. 2026, 182) but is not in force; a royal decree sets the date. We plan without it, and say so.

Refused by a bank, or expecting to be?
We review the file against the refusal reasons DNB itself lists: incomplete documents, unanswered requests, the link with the Netherlands.
Why work with us
First: does the company need a Dutch IBAN at all? A SEPA account may already serve. Then the file, then the route. The notary incorporates, the KVK registers, the bank decides.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the bank refuse my BV, and what can I do?
Banks have freedom of contract with business clients, so a refusal may be commercial; on Wwft grounds a bank may refuse only where it cannot cover the risk. In DNB's 2021 study, 82% of refusals were the bank's own choice and 18% Wwft-based. The options: fix the file, complain to the bank, the courts, another bank or a licensed EMI.
Why won't the bank tell me the reason for the refusal?
It may be unable to. Institutions are bound to secrecy about a report to FIU-Netherlands (art. 23(1) Wwft), so a bank that has reported cannot say so. And for business clients banks have freedom of contract today: they decide for themselves with whom they enter a relationship, and a commercial refusal needs no stated reason.
Can I open the account before the BV is incorporated?
No. The NVB states that an application for a business account is not possible without a KVK number, so a BV in formation cannot apply. The order runs the other way: the notarial deed incorporates the BV without any bank statement, the KVK registers it, and only then does the bank application start.
Is a business bank account legally mandatory for a Dutch BV?
business.gov.nl and the KVK say a BV or NV must have one. No provision of Book 2 of the Civil Code read for this page imposes it, and the bank statement of art. 2:203a BW lapsed on 1 October 2012. It is official guidance and bank practice; the real driver is clear business records for the Belastingdienst.
Do I need a Dutch bank account, or can I use a SEPA account from another country?
A SEPA account in the name of the business or the entrepreneur may be used in the Netherlands, and the Belastingdienst accepts any SEPA IBAN. Within SEPA, a business may not exclude IBANs from other SEPA countries. In practice some organisations still prefer, or only work with, a Dutch IBAN, which is why the question comes first.
Is there now a legal right to a business bank account in the Netherlands?
Not yet. Art. 4:71k Wft was enacted by the Act of 20 May 2026 (Stb. 2026, 182) and enters into force on a date set by royal decree. Once in force, it covers EU undertakings registered in the Dutch Handelsregister, which includes a Dutch BV with non-EU owners. Until then, banks keep their freedom of contract.
Can a foreigner or non-resident open a business bank account in the Netherlands?
For the company, yes, bank by bank. Some banks require a permanent Dutch address, some a Dutch business address, and some accept a foreign address if at least one owner lives in the Netherlands. Enhanced due diligence applies where the client's state is on the EU high-risk list (art. 8(1) Wwft). A personal account follows other rules.
Can I open the account online without travelling to the Netherlands?
It depends on the bank. Rabobank handles all applications from foreign companies through its online application. On the Quick Scan route, ABN AMRO and Rabobank also accept a copy of an identity document legalised by a notary. A shielded visiting address in the Business Register may rule out online opening and mean a visit to the bank.
How long does opening a Dutch business bank account take?
Often 2 to 8 weeks, according to business.gov.nl, and banks may charge a fee for extra checks. No statutory decision period exists for a business account today. The Quick Scan gives an eligibility answer within 5 business days of receipt; regular due diligence follows, with a status update at least once a month.
What is the Quick Scan Dutch Business Bank Account, and who can use it?
An NVB scheme with Rabobank, ABN AMRO and ING for founders assisted by the NFIA or an RVO-recognised facilitator; without that assistance a founder is not eligible. The bank confirms the probability of a successful application within 5 business days. It is not an account and not a shortcut: regular due diligence follows.
Which bank is best for a business account: ABN AMRO, ING or Rabobank?
We do not rank banks. The verifiable differences: all three deal in English on the Quick Scan; ING sends documents in Dutch, ABN AMRO and Rabobank in English; Rabobank handles foreign companies online only; ABN AMRO has a Corporate Non-Residents department. RegioBank, also asked about, now operates as ASN Bank.
Is there a free business bank account in the Netherlands?
No state-mandated free business account exists today. Once art. 4:71k Wft is in force, the basic-account rules apply by analogy: free of charge or for a reasonable fee (art. 4:71f(5) Wft). Banks may also charge for extra checks. Bank tariffs are the banks' own, and our fee for the file review is on request.
Can I use an e-money institution or a neobank instead of a bank?
Yes, if it is licensed: providing payment services or issuing e-money needs a DNB licence (art. 2:3a(1) and 2:10a(1) Wft). The DNB public register states the activities each institution may provide, and DNB says exempted EMIs are not under its supervision. No official source says whether an EMI account meets the BV guidance.
Does the Dutch tax office need a Dutch IBAN, and how do I give it my account number?
No. The Belastingdienst accepts any SEPA IBAN. A foreign account is notified through Mijn Belastingdienst Zakelijk or by letter, and it must be a current account, not a savings account. The letter states the company, its RSIN, the tax concerned, the account number, the BIC, the holder and the bank's country. Confirmation follows within 3 weeks.
What does a Dutch bank account number look like?
A Dutch IBAN has 18 characters: the country code NL, two check digits, a four-letter bank code and ten digits set by the payment service provider that issues it. Persons with a Dutch BSN who live outside the EU have no legal right to a Dutch IBAN, according to Betaalvereniging Nederland, the Dutch Payments Association.
